Felt Lap Vents
Lap vents are a cheap, easy to fit ventilation solution that can solve a loft condensation problem instantly.
A damp loft or attic is usually spotted in the winter months when warm, moist air from the rooms below has risen up into the roof space. It can also occur after adding new loft insulation.
All households produce moisture. It can come from busy kitchens, baths, showers and airing clothes. As warm air rises, it carries the moisture with it as water vapour. When warm air finally enters a cold loft or attic, the drop in temperature turns the vapour back to liquid water. This is the loft condensation that can eventually rot your roof timbers.
Attic or loft condensation is usually a sign of poor ventilation. There are many ways of dealing with poor loft ventilation, but the quickest and most simple solution is to fit felt lap vents. Lap vents can be fitted in any home with lapped roof felt or a lapped membrane fitted over the rafters. The vents are inexpensive and ideal as a DIY remedy for a damp loft.
Felt lap vents are fitted inside the loft – it’s a quick and easy job. The vents are simply clipped onto the lapped edge of a strip of roofing felt close to the eaves. This creates a ventilating air channel between the felt strips. Combined with existing loft space ventilation, clipping one felt lap vent onto the roofing felt between every other rafter is normally sufficient to solve most loft condensation problems.
