Midland Lead Patination Oil, 0.5ltr
Midland Lead Patination Oil, 0.5ltr.
Lead patination oil for lead flashing and all new lead.
Adding an immediate attractive coating, patination oil minimises unsightly white powdery deposits from forming on new lead and prevents the subsequent staining of surrounding brickwork, tiles and slates.
Patination oil also captures the soft blue, bronze, gold and green colour hues naturally apparent on new lead. Over time, these coloured hues will slowly fade, to be replaced by a fine traditional ‘old grey’ lead patina.
500ml of oil covers approximately 30m2 of lead.
Treatment. It is important that new lead is treated immediately. Once the lead flashing has been installed, simply use a soft cloth to apply the oil onto the surface of the lead and allow to dry. Lead patination oil should always be applied to new lead-work prior to overnight exposure and before rain. If the natural lead patination process has started and white powdery deposits have already formed, the lead should be cleaned using lead restorer for new lead, prior to lead patination oil being applied.
Notes: The familiar soft dark grey finish that is a feature of older lead is produced through the process of oxidation. Natural deposits form on the surface of the lead as it reacts with moisture within the atmosphere. Over time, it is this reaction that creates the attractive appearance of ‘old lead’ known as it’s patina or lead patination. A side-effect of the oxidisation process is the formation of white powdery deposits known as white lead carbonate. This is especially noticeable when new lead is exposed to the atmosphere. Typically it is these white deposits that give lead an unsightly appearance, and also stain surrounding brickwork, slates and tiles. Lead patination oil for lead flashing allows the ‘good’ part of the patination process to continue, but minimises the formation of the ugly white carbonate deposits. Both the roofer and property owner benefit as the new lead continues to colour naturally but without the white deposits staining the lead or surrounding materials.
